Born Gilbert John COLBOURNE in Newmarket in Q1-1894 [Newmarket 3b:513], eldest of four sons of Gilbert and Edith COLBOURNE (née MASON) of Side Hill Stud, Newmarket.

1901 census...John [7] was at Sidehill Stud, Newmarket with his father Gilbert [30], stud groom, born Dean Lane End, Hants; his mother Edith [29], born Newmarket and his brothers Richard [3] and Robert [1] and sisters Kate [5] and Olive [1 month]. All the children were Newmarket born.

1911 census...Now Gilbert [18] was at Park House, Kingsclere, Newbury, stables of William Waugh. His parents remained at Sidehill Stud, Newmarket. Gilbert now had 2 new brothers, Sidney [7] and William [9] and 2 more sisters Ivy Ellen [6] and Dorothy Grace [3].

Later his parents moved to Harlestone, Norfolk. In the census he was John or Gilbert, the Army have him as Gilbert and the War Memorial has Jack !.

He enlisted in Ely. CWGC have him as a native of Newmarket


The Newmarket Journal stated he was in the Machine Gun Corps and drowned whilst swimming

Gilbert is buried in Deir el Belah War Cemetery, Israel. Ref:C.86
and is also commemorated on the Roll of Honour of All Saints School, Newmarket
and on the family grave in Newmarket
